The total number of pet talent points available at level 80 is 16, unless you are a Beast Mastery Hunter with the 51-point talent Beast Mastery (http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?spell=53270), in which case you get an additional five points, for 21 total.
Each successive tier requires three points per previous tier to unlock (compare to five points for player talents). The exception is single-point talents such as Charge (http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?spell=7371) or any of the tier 5 talents, which require five points per previous tier, according to their tooltips; the exception to this exception is Boar's Speed (http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?spell=19596).
This means that the tier 5 talents are only available to BM hunters, since they require 20 points to unlock (again according to their tooltips), and any given pet can have at most one of them at a time.
The last two points are based on how the tooltips read. However, this is not how they're currently implemented in-game; in the beta right now, all talents require three points per previous tier to unlock, which means non-BM hunters can get two out of three tier 5 talents for any given pet. So there is a discrepancy between how the tooltips read and how it actually works when you go to spend the points. I'm guessing the tooltips are correct, since that would keep the tier 5 talents BM-only, and prevent hunters from getting more than one tier 5 talent.

This actually looks pretty cool, it makes BM a bit more special in a way that their pets are truely better/more special than mm/sv hunters, in a sense that they get abilities other pets don't.

Combine this with the fact that different families get different end tier talents and there's 3 end tier talents to choose from for each family it makes your pet very customizable. Some of the pet abilities also look pretty cool like:

Roar of recovery - 6m cooldown 40% total mana restore (great for grinding probably)
Bullheaded - 3m cooldown pvp trinket for your pet
Last stand - 6m cooldown like the warrior talent
Taunt - 3m cooldown, bit too long tbh but can be nice to save someone in a 5mans
Roar of fortitude - 5m cooldown increases party stam and dodge by 10% for 40 seconds.
Heart of the phoenix - Whenever your pet dies it gets a selfrez with 10% health, internal 10m cooldown.

And some other cool stuff. Long enough cooldowns to not be abusable but there are definetely some very cool abilities for both pvp grinding and instances/raids.

ehh, bok, no they will not, this is an example of the 'exotic' pet families available to 51 point beastmasters...unless they are going to change the talent into you get 5 extra pettalent points (which it already does) it's gonna stay.

So you'd consider it normal to see a dinosaur the size of a small jumbo jet running around town? There must be some sort of limit to which exotic pets you can tame exactly.

you're forgetting pet resizing when you tame them? that aside what I really think is retarded is the fact that some hunters want dragonkin as pets....
